Q. What is a water treatment system?
A. It’s a piece of installed equipment that treats various water situations such as hardness, iron, manganese, low pH levels, iron bacteria and sulfur bacteria.
Q. How does it work?
A. There are two main ways to treat water. If you’re on town-supplied water, you need a water softener that uses resin and carbon to remove chlorine and treat the hardness. When you’re on a private well, you use a special, naturally grown crystal that treats everything listed above. We do not use chemicals. The new technology is natural.
Q. What does hard water do?
A. The No. 1 effect is on your plumbing system. There’s a calcium buildup that deteriorates and clogs the system. Also, your clothes don’t get properly cleaned because there’s no soap lather. There may be skin irritations. It changes the texture of your hair and, if you use hair dye, it can change the color of your hair. Your swimming pool will always appear cloudy or milky. It may cut your water heater’s life in half. And we’ve had customers whose $10,000 central air-conditioning systems break down because of the sulfur, which eats holes in the copper pipes and the plumbing.

Q. And it treats your drinking water, too?
A. Yes, because part of the treatment uses a filter for the drinking water. You will notice a change in the taste. It’s basically like drinking bottled water. And, for the same monthly cost of what people pay for bottled water, they can have a water treatment system installed in their home.
Q. Can you take the system with you when you move?
A. Yes you can, but you will need a plumber to uninstall it.
Q. What else do I need to know?
A. The important thing is to have the water tested before you buy, because the results will match you to the proper system. Each model has different functions.
