Three most common pool heater problems

Swimming pool heaters are great, but they can also develop problems that can keep you from enjoying your pool when the weather gets a little brisk. Here are some of the more common issues that affect these devices.

1. The water level may be too low, creating an inflow of air into the skimmer and, as a result, shutting off the heater. The pump will continue to attempt to prime and the heater will cycle on and off.
2. The heater can also cycle on and off if its heat exchanger is dirty, either due to debris or an accumulation of soot. This can lead to heat coming out of the bottom of the burners and causing the safety heat sensors to trip.
3. If you have a gas model, spiders can often make webs inside the burner that can block gas flow. The pilot may blow out and the heater will not be able to start. Mice and rats can often chew on the wiring of an electric heater. They can also build nests on the tops of burners and the heat exchanger, causing the system’s safety switch to trip so it doesn’t overheat.
