In an effort to reduce the overall carbon emissions and energy usage of homes nationwide, the Department of Energy in the U.S. has passed a new set of regulations on water heater efficiency that go into effect April 15th. How do these changes effect your home, and is your current water heater prepared for 2015? The plumbing experts of Warwick here at Jones Services are here with some answers.
The new efficiency standards apply mainly to manufacturers and plumbers. Starting this April, current water heater models will no longer be in production, and they will no longer be legal to install. Manufacturers have designed and are already producing higher efficiency water heater models that have a greater degree of insulation (meaning they lose less of the heat they produce to the surrounding air). These water heaters are typically:
- 2 Inches Wider and Taller
- 35% More Expensive
Only these higher efficiency units will be available for purchase or installation.
So what does that mean for you?
After the April deadline, you will not be able to get a direct replacement for your current water heater. You don’t have to go out and exchange your water heater for the higher efficiency model now…but if you wait until after the deadline, you may have more difficulty!
That’s because the new units, being larger and more expensive, may not fit your home or your current budget. If you attic access can’t fit the newer model, you may need to cut a larger whole. If you need a larger gas line, you may need it resized. If your utility room or water heater closet is too small, you may even need to knock out a wall! So if your water heater is on the verge of collapse, you may have an issue on your hands. Waiting until it breaks to perform the replacement could leave you high and not-so-dry.
But you can avoid all of these headaches! All you need to do is call Jones for a water heater replacement before the April deadline, and we’ll be able to install a direct replacement for your specific needs.
